FAQs

Does voltage matter on A glass fuse? ›

The voltage rating of a fuse must be at least equal to or greater than the circuit voltage. It can be higher but never lower. For instance, a 600V fuse can be used in a 208V circuit. The voltage rating of a fuse is a function of its capability to open a circuit under an overcurrent condition.

How do you remove A small glass fuse? ›

If you encounter tubular glass fuses, look for one that's black inside or no longer has its filaments intact. To remove this blown fuse, gently pry it out with your fingers, a very small standard screwdriver, a small set of pliers, or, as a last resort, a bent paper clip.

Can you tell if A glass fuse is blown? ›

The glass tube forms a physical guard for the fuse, so that when it blows the molten metal does not cause damage or injury. A glass tube allows you to see when the fuse has blown: there will be a gap in the wire or a metallic smear on the inside of the glass.

What does the T mean on A glass fuse? ›

This particular fuse is “T” speed rated which means it is a slow-acting (Timelag) fuse, sometimes also referred to as anti-surge. It is able to tolerate higher power levels for a short period, without shorting and so if a sudden change occurs, this fuse will not blow immediately.

Do glass fuses have a positive and negative? ›

Simply put, a fuse is just a piece of wire. It doesn't have any polarity.

Are glass fuses AC or DC? ›

Generally, fuses have a DC voltage rating that is half of the maximum AC voltage rating.

Can I use a normal fuse instead of glass? ›

You can replace a glass fuse with ceramic, but not recommended to replace a ceramic with glass.

Are all glass fuses the same size? ›

There are a few different styles with different diameters and lengths. Automotive Glass (AG) fuses come in nine different styles, and SFE fuses measure 1/4-inch in diameter and between 5/8-inch and 17/16-inch in length. MDL fuses are different because they are time-delayed, meaning they burn at a slower rate.

Are glass fuses still used? ›

These are still used in consumer units in some parts of the world, but are becoming less common. While glass fuses have the advantage of a fuse element visible for inspection purposes, they have a low breaking capacity (interrupting rating), which generally restricts them to applications of 15 A or less at 250 VAC.

Do glass fuses have polarity? ›

There is no polarity so you can use any lead for either fuse cap.

How do I know what glass fuse I need? ›

Most electronic fuses will have the voltage and amp rating stamped on the end cap. The type of fuse can generally be visually identified. Also, owner's manuals will have the correct replacement fuse generically identified. For example: “Use a 2 amp, time-delay, 250 volt fuse.”

What does the F stand for on glass fuse? ›

Alternatively, “F” stands for “Fast” or “fast acting fuses” with the “FF” rating for ultra-rapid fuses such as the one shown here.

What does 313 mean on A fuse? ›

313 and 315 series fuses have time-delayed in the overload.

What does Al mean on A glass fuse? ›

“L” is the fuse breaking capacity (or short circuit rating) which is defined as the amount of current that will cause the fuse to open if a fault or short circuit occurs. Low indicates very little over-current will cause an open.

Does a fuse depend on current or voltage? ›

The energy is mainly dependent on current and time for fuses as well as the available fault level and system voltage. Since the I2t rating of the fuse is proportional to the energy it lets through, it is a measure of the thermal damage from the heat and magnetic forces that will be produced by a fault end.

Can I use a 240V fuse in a 12V circuit? ›

The other one is rated to safely handle 12V while the other is rated to safely handle 240V. They are not interchangeable in any way and it would be extremely dangerous to put a 12V fuse where 250V is required, or to put a 20A fuse where 1A is required.

Should there be voltage across a fuse? ›

If there is little to no voltage developed across the fuse, it means the resistance of the fuse connector is near zero, and the fuse is good.

Can I use a 250V fuse instead of 24V? ›

Yes. A fuse can have a maximum voltage at which it can be used. That is simply because a high enough voltage has the ability to ionise air, and jump across a gap.
